About Notice & Nurture Lab
We look beyond behavior.
Notice & Nurture Lab creates practical, research-informed tools that help families and educators better understand children’s behavior, regulation, communication, and sensory needs.
We believe difficult behavior is not simply something to stop. It is information—an invitation to notice what a child may be experiencing, understand the context surrounding the moment, and respond with greater intention.
Our resources help adults replace quick assumptions with thoughtful observation:
What is the child communicating?
What might be making this moment difficult?
What support could make participation more accessible?
Our Mission
Our mission is to make regulation-informed, neurodiversity-affirming practices understandable and usable in everyday life.
We translate research and professional knowledge into approachable tools that help families and educators:
Notice patterns behind behavior
Recognize possible sensory, emotional, physical, and communication needs
Reflect on environmental and relational factors
Plan individualized, responsive support
Create conditions that promote access, participation, safety, and belonging
Why Notice & Nurture?
Notice means slowing down long enough to observe the child, the environment, and the demands of the moment.
Nurture means responding in ways that protect dignity, strengthen connection, and support developing skills.
The Lab represents our commitment to curiosity, evidence, reflection, and continued learning. Children are not experiments. The “lab” is where adults examine their own assumptions, study patterns, test more responsive approaches, and learn from what happens next.
Our Approach
We believe:
Behavior is meaningful, even when its meaning is not immediately clear.
Regulation often needs to come before reasoning, problem-solving, or learning.
Understanding behavior does not mean permitting unsafe actions.
Support should be individualized rather than based on one universal strategy.
Environments and adult responses can either reduce or increase a child’s stress.
Families and educators deserve practical tools that respect both research and real life.
Every child deserves access, participation, dignity, and belonging.
Our work is not about labeling every difficult moment as dysregulation or eliminating all expectations. It is about helping adults pause, gather information, maintain safety, and respond with greater understanding.
Our Foundation
Notice & Nurture Lab was founded by a special education school leader, educator, instructional coach, and doctoral researcher with extensive experience supporting young neurodivergent children, their families, and the professionals who serve them.
The Lab grew from a central question:
What changes when adults learn to recognize regulation needs before interpreting a child’s behavior as intentional noncompliance?
Our resources are informed by experience in early childhood special education, inclusive teaching, developmental and regulation-focused practices, instructional coaching, and ongoing doctoral research.
Notice & Nurture Lab is intentionally being built as an organization—not a personality-driven platform. Its purpose is to create useful, sustainable resources that can support families, classrooms, and communities far beyond one individual.
Start With Curiosity
You do not need to know the exact reason for a child’s behavior before responding compassionately.
You can begin by noticing the signals, considering the context, and asking what support might help.
Notice the signals. Understand the context. Nurture belonging.
Notice & Nurture Lab provides educational and reflective resources. Our materials do not provide medical advice, diagnosis, therapy, or individualized treatment.
